Race No. 001 · Ironman South Africa · Iron
Feel like I nailed my pacing and did a mature and patient race. It was almost flawless apart from a few small issues on the bike and the nausea on the run. Feels like a great foundation to slightly improve on.

Swim - What went well
Stuck to my pacing and stayed composed during the choppy conditions.
Swim - Challenges
Possibly swam too wide on first lap and didn't stick to feet
Bike - What went well
Kept the effort under control and felt relatively easy the whole ride. Kept proactive with hydration and nutrition. I made last minute decision to raise my front end to be more comfortable and it was easy to stay in aero position.
Bike - Challenges
Gears were jumping from the start and chain dropped on first hill forcing me to get off. Stopped at the bike maintenance tent at 13km but after 5min the mechanic said he couldn't help. Gears kept jumping the rest of the ride but mostly mitigated while in large chainring which forced my cadence to be lower on the hills. Gel bottle between the arms popped open by mistake when trying to get it out and gel went into bento box and all over top tube and bottom water bottle. So much stickiness everywhere throughout the ride! Bee flew into my helmet on the second lap, I felt it crawling around and a few seconds later felt the sting in my head. On the last lap I grabbed a Electrolyte mix from the first table of aid station but it was only half full, I needed to get a water bottle from the last table of the aid station but there was no water left so rode without water and only with about 300ml of electrolyte mix. At the next aid station I picked up two bottles of water and an electrolyte bottle. Shortly after settling in I went over a rough patch of road and the electrolyte bottle fell off and broke so I finished the last hour without any electrolytes. I had a salt tablet which I took with water.
Run - What went well
Kept heart rate down and early pace felt easy. Managed nausea well for a good portion of the run.
Run - Challenges
Felt nauseous at 15km which is potentially from nutrition strategy on bike. Didn't know whether I needed more or less to drink eat to try and fix my stomach. Got to 32km and eventually pulled over and had an aggressive vomit for a few minutes. Managed a walk/run strategy for the next 10km while wanting to vomit again a few times. Jogged through the last 2km to the finish.
