Unihertz Titan 2 Elite

It was ironically the Samsung Galaxy Fold 8 that got me to stumble upon this device. Like many people, I fondly remember my days with my Blackberry Bold 9700 and 9900 and would comfortably say they were my favourite phones. I have been on a slew of modern mid-range and flagship slab phones the last few years and gosh they are boring. It is so underwhelming getting a brand new top of the range phone and 30 minutes later, once everything is transferred across, the phone is nigh identical to the old one. I am a big collector and keeper of my “toys”, yet there is little desire for me to keep these slab phones.

Having had my S22 Ultra for the obligatory 2 years before feeling irresponsible enough to justify an upgrade, I just didn’t feel like I wanted to get an almost identical S24 Ultra. I was tempted to maybe get an iPhone just for the novelty but I know that I don’t like iOS. An example of why can possibly be explained by me having used Yantra Launcher on my phone the last few years - see below:

I heard about the Minimal Phone 1 in April 2024 and after a few hours of reading Reddit Posts I decided to back it on Indiegogo - only expecting to receive it around October 2024. That’s fine…I WANT it NOW but am a mature adult so can wait a few months.

I had a bit of a wandering eye when the Galaxy Fold 7 was hyped and released in September 2024 but I knew my Minimal Phone was going to be with me “shortly”. Unfortunately and quite common with crowd-funded projects, I only got the Minimal Phone in July 2025! Had I known it would take that long to arrive I never would have placed the order, just for the sheer lack of patience to wait.

So how was the Minimal Phone 1? Was the wait worth it? I got the phone in July 2025…if you’ve read the Phone Register on this website you’ll know that I bought a Flip 7 one month later. Enough said.

The Flip 7 has been pretty cool. It’s amazing how it can just disappear into a pocket. The cover screen hardly ever gets used and needing to open the screen to use it has introduced a nice amount of friction to using my phone. Once it’s open though, it’s still a slab phone. I like it, but I don’t love it.

Largely, due to my lukewarm feelings toward to my Flip 7, I was succumbing to the hype of the new Samsung Foldables, as in particular, the new Passport sized Fold 8. After watching ALL the rumour videos on Youtube, I had given myself full permission to buy the Fold 8 on pre-order as soon as they started. Then I saw the price! I have the 512GB Flip 7 - getting the 256GB Fold 8 was so expensive, let alone upgrading to the 512GB model to reach storage parity with my flip. My self-written permission was about to be torn up…BUT WAIT…I remembered how great my trade-in was for my S10 Plus that enabled me to get my S22 Ultra! I’ll trade-in my year old Flip 7, problem solved! Until the indicative trade-in amount was only 14% of the cost of the Fold 8. Permission slip torn up and burnt.

Getting the taste of potentially buying a new gadget, only to have nothing was rather underwhelming. That’s when one of the algorithm gods intervened and showed me the Clicks Communicator, which I was aware of, but my patience for waiting for another crowd funded project was expunged. It’s still an incredibly interesting device and one that I’m keeping an eye on. So I did what any nerd would do, and started researching the phone and reading what people have to say about it.

Now, that is all a VERY long introduction into how I discovered the Titan 2 Elite! My research found that there are 3 interesting phones either here or on the release radar:

• Clicks Communicator - release “scheduled” for December 2026
• Minimal Phone 2 - release “scheduled” for December 2026
• Unihertz Titan 2 Elite - released! Well mostly only to influencers and some Kickstarter backers.

Evidence

“Scheduled to be released end of this year”…fool me once! Luckily, the Titan 2 Elite has plenty of coverage on the web with delivery seemingly underway. The specs and reviews also stack up and are positive enough that I can see myself using this full-time as my only phone. Getting a R11,000 mid-range phone is a VERY different game to the Flagship game. Spending R45,000 on a phone and still being tricked by marketing in wanting to upgrade it 2 years later is a cruel game that I am happy to tap out of. I also got out my two old BlackBerry Bold devices and golly gosh do they feel great to hold and type on.

I spent an embarrassingly long amount of time with Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini to justify my purchase. They agreed to my reasoning of wanting to buy the phone…I didn’t even have to remove my “don’t be a sycophant” system instruction for them. With my decision locked and loaded, I went to the Unihertz website to buy the phone and was intrigued to find a local South African url. AND…they have the phone in stock! “In Stock - Ready to Ship” with “Delivery time between 1-5 days” and “Dispatch within 24 hours after payment”! So on Monday 24 August I made my order, giving them a full week to deliver the phone to me in time for the weekend.

Well, as at 7 September, I still don’t have it. A few days after placing my order, I sent a query to customer support to see where my phone is. From what I can gather, the South African website was basically lying and they will get the phone to me “as soon as they can”.

So we wait…and rewatch every Youtube video in anticipation…and refresh my order page hourly.
